HELP US TO HELP YOU
At Alexanders we know that coming across a bailiff for the first time can be a daunting experience. Let us answer some of your queries to put your mind at ease.
What are the bailiff's rights?
The very fact that Alexanders have been asked to collect your debt means that the courts have decided you must pay. If you are unable to pay we are obliged to take possessions from you, which we will sell to cover some of your debt.
- Bailiffs have the power of entry and do not have to be invited in
- We have a legal right to collect the money you owe
- We may seize goods if you do not pay what you owe
- We may be able to make an arrangement for you to pay two or three smaller amounts
- You will not be charged more as long as you stick to the arrangement
What if I cant pay?
If you are unable to pay the amount you owe we may be able to make arrangements for you to pay smaller regular amounts. This does not incur extra charges if you keep up the payment terms that we agree. If you are unable to pay we may have to take some of your property, which we will sell to pay off some of your debt
- We may be able to make an arrangement for you to pay by smaller regular amounts
- You will not be charged more as long as you stick to the arrangement
- Be aware over 90% of arrangements with bailiffs nationally are broken
- Broken arrangements means additional costs
- We may have to take property, which we will sell to pay off some of your debt
What if I dont pay?
The court has decided that you must pay your debt. Non-payment is not an option. Ultimately failure to pay could put you in contempt of court and you could go to prison. Alexanders can discuss with you methods for making smaller regular payments or taking some of your property, which we will sell to pay off your debt.
- The law says you must pay your debt
- We may be able to make an arrangement for you to pay by smaller regular amounts
- If you do not make your payment we may take your property and sell it to pay off some of your debt
Where can I get help?
You may wish to contact the organisation or authority that you owe money to. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help. Alexanders will do all that we can to assist you but we do not have any power to reverse the decision of the court.
